marie's review on " The Royal Tenembaums "

hello !! 

I'm going to speak to you about a dark comedy that we have seen with my English teacher last Thursday  !! It was " The Royal Tenenbaums ".

This film was directed by Wes Anderson and it was released the December 4, 2001. The screenplay has been written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. It lasts 109 minutes and the score is by Mark Mothersbaugh. Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Andrew Wilson, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Danny Glover, Bill Murray are starring in this film. The plot was rewarded with an Oscar.

Screenplay:

Since their most young age The Tenenbaums 's children were all geniuses. Margot was adopted and was a famous playwright: she wrote her first play when she was nine . Richie became a well-known tennis player. And Chas was a successful business man: He created his first business at 10. Their parents (Royal and Ethelin) get divorced and Ethelin brought up her children alone. Twenty years after things have changed: Chas tries to bring up his children after his wife's death. Margot is married with a shrink and smokes without anyone knowing. Richie sails on a boat following a nervous breakdown during a match. Indeed he loves Margot and he couldn't stand seeing her married. And finally Ethelin is an archaeologist and her accountant wants to get married with her. The father, Royal, would like to reunite his family in order to win his wife's and children 's affection. So he makes them believe that he is dying. Everybody meet in the family home …

My opinion:

I think that the plot is very original and funny. Actors play very well and I think that the way to present the story is interesting. Indeed, chapters give structure to the story. Moreover the audience feel involved and has the impression that it is reading the story and imagine it in same time. Some sequences are moving but the next scene gives us again the smile. At the beginning I have had some difficulties to understand who was who because of the many characters. As regards music I did not like it, it was too old. This film aims at showing that family is more important that anything.

I think that you should watch this film, you'll spend a good time. And why not in family.
