Rio de Janeiro ! By Joany

Rio de Janeiro is a city in Brazil in Latin America.
Rio was discovered on January 1, 1502, by the Portuguese, who thought they had found the mouth of a river. It was the capital of Brazil from 1816 to 1959.
The inhabitants of Rio are called Carioca, which means in India: 'white man's house'.

Now there are 10 million of inhabitants.

In Rio, there are 650 favelas. At the beginning, a favela was a slum but the residents improved them.
The favelas are poor neighborhoods.

In addition, Rio de Janeiro is famous for Copacabana. Copacabana is from July 6, 1892 a district is located south of the city. In this district, there is a beach of the same name, 4.5 km long and is one of the most famous beaches in the world.

But I think you know Rio for his carnival. It takes place in the Sambadrome during four days. The carnival is the most popular national day in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro in particulier. It is the most important tourist event of the municipality of Rio, and is one of the most famous carnivals worldwide. During this big party, groups of samba schools parade.

I could not finish without talking about this huge statue popular in Brazil. The famous statue of Christ stands on the peak of Corcovado with a height of 710 meters and can be seen from all districts of Rio. The statue is 38 meters high. The French sculptor Paul Landowski and the Brazilian architect Costa Silva created this statue in 1931.
